Almost every day in traffic reports, we hear the horror stories of over-turned trucks on the highway, wiping out several cars and passengers. And for most of us, we get nervous when we have to drive behind these cumbersome giants on the road.
Transporting heavy loads on the highway has many potential dangers, and that is why there are strict highway regulations pertaining to the weight a truck can carry. Should these regulations not be adhered to, the company managing the truck can face serious penalties and overloading fines.
For this reason, in most transportation and logistics management companies it is important that the load of the truck is weighed ensure the trucks are within legal weight limits. Aside from the obvious safety concerns, overloaded trucks can lead to other issues and complications for owners. Constant overloading of a truck can lead more wear and tear on the truck, and truck repairs are far from cheap.
For logistics management companies that deal in the transport business, it is important to have the proper weighing systems in place to ensure each truck is legal and safe from transport. There are several truck scales made specifically for this purpose, but two particular types of truck scale systems are most common for logistics management companies. These include: weighbridge truck scales and on-board truck scales.
Weighbridge Truck Scales
Weighbridge truck scales are a special metal bridge made that is installed at a truck departure venue (although there are specialized portable version available.) The loaded truck will drive up onto this bridge to be weighed.
An advantage of weighbridge truck scales is that they can be used on a multitude of trucks as well as other heavy duty material. It is definitely versatile for a wide range vehicles, when properly calibrated. A disadvantage is that weighbridge scales for trucks are often installed to fixed concrete foundations, and they don't offer the same level or convenience or efficiency as portable truck scales or on-board truck scales. Nonetheless, weighbridges provide a great option for companies in transport and logistics management.
On-board Truck Scales
On-board truck scales are wireless systems that are fitted to the truck. These on-board scale systems use a special signal which is transmitted to a monitor. How they work is by using load cell technology as well as pressure readings of the air suspension. This reading will determine the weight of the load that is being place on the vehicle axis.
On-board scales can be installed on a wide variety of trucks, and they are specially fitted to meet the trucks requirements. The primary advantage is that the scale and readout is on the truck itself, eliminating the need to drive-up to an external scale unit. The disadvantage is that each truck in the transport fleet will need have to have its own scale fitted and installed. This can be both costly and time consuming, depending on the size of the company.
